There are five possible candidates to walk away with the Calder Trophy awarded to the best NHL rookie each year. As of this writing, it appears that the Detroit Red Wings Moritz Seider is leading the pack. We'll cover three of the candidates right here.
Seider is far and away the best rookie from the 2019 NHL draft. The #6 selection by Red Wings has five goals, 40 assists in 71 contests. Seider leads the team in points by a defenseman, power play assists, time on the ice, and blocks.
One unique twist in this year's Calder race is two teammates are vying against one another. Lucas Raymond is having a great rookie season. He has tallied 22 goals, 31 assists in 71 games. Raymond also has five power play goals, while assisting on 12.
Trevor Zegras seemed to be the favorite until Seider took over. Zegras is famous for his attention getting lacrosse style goals, among other fancy plays.
He has scored 18 goals, 33 assists in 65 games this season.
Unless something drastic happens, it appears that Seider has the inside track for the hardware.
I'm sure he'll make room for it on his mantle.
