The Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL have been lit under fire during last nights set of game, but during one specifically, the Buffalo Sabres vs the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kevin Bieska, who spent fourteen years in the NHL and is now a broadcaster on Hockey Night in Canada was not a fan of it whatsoever, and fans believe it was a rigged call.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were killing a penalty when forward Mitch Marner had a near breakaway scenario, where he then dropped the puck to defensemen Mark Giordano. It appeared Giordano scored and the puck crossed the line, but there was one issue.. the net was knocked off long before the puck went across the goal line.
Here's a look at the ''goal'', that was waived off but later deemed a goal:
The issue surrounding this goal is that on multiple scenarios similar to this, it is always ruled a non-goal, and it was last night until the Leafs challenged it and whenever a team used there coaches challenge, the call and decision is made in Toronto...
Kevin Bieska stated his frustration surrounding the controversy:
''I don't like this,'' I understand what we're trying to do now with the net coming off... maybe I'm a traditionalist.''
''The net goes off which I get sucks and it's delay of game penalty... but like 6 minutes later Giordano gets a breakaway against an imaginary net and the puck goes in through the imaginary net? This is like my brothers in my grandparents basement playing mini-sticks."
"The puck goes in and doesn't hit the post because it's not there, so it goes through the imaginary post?" said Bieksa. "What are we doing here?"
