But does the main story lie with how close the game was? Foligno Brothers leading the scoring for their respective teams? Each team getting the chance to hold the lead, and losing it? An inevitable inter-division fight? While all those events made for an undoubtedly interesting game, the best, as they say, was yet to come.
With a score of 2-2, the game was forced into a 3-on-3 OT. With no goals scored, we moved on to the shootout. Fleury vs. his old team, and newest Blackhawks official goalie, Arvid Soderblöm. The Wild shot first, and scored with Mats Zuccarello. And then Chicago, instead of sending out a familiar face for Fleury, put up their phenom. What better way to welcome an 18 year old super star to the league, than giving him the first shot in a pre-season shootout? Clearly, Marc-André Fleury thought he needed to do his part to welcome the youngster to the club, and he did just that. Moments later, he provided a similar service to new Blackhawk Taylor Hall.
No one else scored, and Minnesota won the game 3-2. Welcome to the NHL, Connor, courtesy of The Flower.
