In last night's 2-1 shoot out win over the Oilers, Colorado Avalanche net minder Darcy Kuemper tied Marc-André Fleury's OT save record of 11. The record was set when Fleury and the Penguins played Ottawa on March 14, 2009. No one scored in that OT, and the game went to a S/O, which the Penguins ended up losing. However, they would go on to win the Stanley Cup that year, so it all turned out fine in the end. Perhaps the same fate awaits Kuemper and the Avs?
Colorado currently sits on top of the entire league with 110 points. In his last 10 games, Kuemper has a SV% of .956 and has been with the Avs since he was traded by Arizona in the off-season, last year. The 6'5» 31 year old was selected by Minnesota in the 6th round of the 2009 draft, but did not play for them until the 2012-13 season. He also spent a season with the Kings in 2017-18 before joining the Coyotes.
Aside from his 11 OT saves, Kuemper also made 38 saves in regulation. The Avs did not have any SOG in the OT, making the statement, «He saved the game», both literal and an outrageous understatement.
