Raanta was the Hurricanes netminder from 2021-2024 and started 24 games in Carolina. last season. His record was 12-7-2, with a 2.99 GAA and a .872 save percentage.
He has gone this far without a contract, until the Vancouver Canucks are considering inviting him to their training camp on a PTO, according to Canucks Insider Rick Dhaliwal.
With only Artur Silovs in the net, while Thatcher Demko continues to heal after his knee surgery, the Canucks options in net are limited.
Their current 3rd string goalie is former Golden Knights goalie, Jiri Patera, who has only nine games of NHL experience.
And with Casey DeSmith out long-term, this might be a necessity for the team to utilize whatever veteran experience Raanta can offer.
Raanta could be plan B, should their other plan to recruit Kevin Lankinen on a PTO or standard contract fail. The veteran is a high-risk candidate, as he's never played more than 30 games a season, since 2019-2020.
He ended up unclaimed on waivers this past March and went into free-agency unclaimed.
His last contract was a $1.5 Million AAV deal, for a year, so he'd be a risky bet should the Canucks decide to spend cap space on him.
