Hockey Community Mourns Tragic Loss of Former First Round Pick At 47-Years Old
Today, the hockey community is in grief after the passing of former Washington Capitals player Miika Elomo who died at the age of 47.
Elomo's death came too early and his passion on and off the ice will be deeply missed by the community he loved.
In the 1995 NHL Draft, the Capitals drafted Elomo with the 23rd pick.
During his two NHL games in the 1999-2000 season, he collected a single assist. Though he played for just two years in North America, he made his presence felt in the American Hockey League (AHL) where he scored 30 goals and 45 assists in 216 games.
After his four-year stint in North America, Elomo went back to Finland. The Blues of the SM-Liiga, the highest league of hockey in Finland. His last season as an active player was in 2004-05 after which he stopped playing but remained active in hockey.
As a coach, Elomo worked with different European teams and even became the head coach of Cergy-Pontoise in France.

Elomo was selected 23rd-overall by the Washington Capitals in 1995. He had zero goals, one point through two games
played in the NHL with Washington in 1999-2000.
He also had a professional career from 1994-2005 with TPS
(Liga) 4=, Kiekko-67 (Finland3) 4, Portland Pirates (AHL)
, Saint Johns Flames (AHL) I*ll, and Blues (Liiga) *
He had coaching stints with:

� TUTO Hockey (Finland2) #= / head coach from 2015-2019
� Storhamar (Norway) # / head coach from 2019-2020
� Finland U20 national team #= / assistant coach from 2020-2022, head coach in 2022
� STS Sanok (Poland) �/ head coach from 2022-2023
� Cergy-Pontoise (France) � / head coach from 2023-2025
Through his coaching career that lasted more than a decade, he molded young players and helped grow the sport.
