NHL general manager buries Gary Bettman and the lies he's said
The NHL pretends to have parity, but for the most part, it is a lie which is demonstrated by teams who have an advantage.
Those teams are sheltered in states that reside in America and get the tax benefits teams in Canada, don't typically enjoy.
GM of the Nashville Predators, Barry Trotz was interviewed on TSN's Overdrive and stated that being in a tax-free state is attractive for NHLers for this reason:
"It is an advantage because your dollar goes a little bit farther,"
More or less GM Trotz has burst that bubble, as he freely admits that teams like the Predators have an advantage over, someone like the Oilers.
This only helped the Preds to secure Steven Stamkos, Brady Skjei, and Jonathan Marchessault during free agency.
This gave the Preds an advantage over someone like the Oilers or Flames:
"When you talk to Stamkos or Marchessault or players that are serial winners, guys that have gone deep, have had good careers, and made a lot of money, it doesn't go that far," Trotz continued. "But it does help the middle group a little bit. For the elite players, the top players, they're just looking for a place that's serious about winning, wants to win, fits in their window."
You only need to look to Florida, a tax-free state, and how it helped the team foster a championship roster in 2023-2024.
Preceded by the Vegas Golden Knights, and Tampa Bay Lightning, the two previous years as well.
This gives American teams a huge advantage over Canadian organizations, a truth the NHL refuses to admit.
