Social media platforms are ripe for exploitation by scammers, through deceptive ads and techniques, they can gain clicks. The ads often ask evocative questions and attempt to get users to click on ads, and consumers experience disappointment as they get used and abused by fraudulent companies and bad actors.
They can go viral and drive revenue for sites, which explains why they're still around.
Gretzky has fallen victim to one of the ads on Elon Musk's "X" platform, unsurprisingly as he lets bad actors run rampant.
The post depicts Gretzky in cuffs, in the custody of law enforcement.
The picture, headlines and everything related to the story are fabricated. No scandal involving Gretzky exists, and he hasn't been arrested. It's a technique that uses a plot to get users to click on the link to view the nonexistent reason for arrest.
This tactic, like many of Musk's other, has people questioning his ability to deal with "X" as his troubles mount. Is he facing financial difficulties?
This scenario isn't too different from what Sidney Crosby experienced recently. Scammers used his image fraudulently for ads to drive traffic to websites from "X".
These ads made false claims about Crosby's legal issues, which also were nonexistent.
The fake ad led to a false story claiming Crosby retired due to using PEDs of which he was supposedly endorsing.
Crosby has no endorsement deal with the product of which the website the ad led to claims. These scams are a new trend, targeting high-profile athletes and people and have been spreading widely across all social platforms, including "X".
This will likely result in more legal action taken against the companies involved, as Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby prepare to fight them in court.
