The situation in Beantown has gone from bad to worse as all parties from Bruins ownership, this Bruins management along with Swayman and his agent Lewis Gross have all aired their opinions publicly on how terrible this negotiation has gone. The Bruins have boxed themselves in as the stalemate continues to wear on with the season on the horizon.
This has led to trade speculation which the Blackhawks appeared to be one of the prime locations Swayman to go. It's an intriguing rumor and one that would accelerate the Blackhawks rebuilding process exponentially as the 25-year-old goaltender appears to be entering his prime and has shown that he can lead a team especially in the playoffs.
Several names have been mentioned as potential players that would be needed in a package to acquire him including Frank Nazar, Oliver Moore, Lukas Reichel and goaltender Petr Mrazek. There's also Drew Commesso who has been deemed as a potentially the Blackhawks next upcoming goaltender.
If general manager Kyle Davidson were to attempt to make a trade of this magnitude, certainly one of those or several of those names would need to be included in the package as the Bruins would be giving up a cornerstone portion of their franchise. This trade would be one of the largest trades in terms of value and affect on teams going forward for the next several years.
Others have mentioned the offer sheet route which would protect the Blackhawks prospects and roster players, and it would only cost them draft picks based on how much the salary being negotiated. It's been speculated the Bruins offered him an 8-year $64 million contract which would put him at $8 million AAV. This would cost the Blackhawks a first-round pick, a second round and third round which in my opinion would be reasonable considering what the Blackhawks would be getting.
If Swayman received between 9 and $11 million AAV on an offer sheet, the draft pick cost would be more significant as they would need to give up two first round picks, a second and a third round. I find it unlikely that Davidson would be willing to give up that much draft capital.
It's safe to say that a deal can be made as teams like the Blackhawks, Utah hockey club and other rebuilding franchises would certainly inquire on what it would take to pry Swayman from the Bruins.
If negotiations continue to fail and Swayman begins to lose large swaths of games, it's safe to say general manager Don Sweeney would need to look at his trade options as soon as possible.
