The Rockford IceHogs made a special announcement prior to their home opener yesterday when they selected Brett Seney as their new captain of the team.

The team also announced Cole Guttman and Isaac Phillips as assistant captains as the IceHogs prepare to compete for a Calder cup trophy.

The 28-year-old forward had been selected in the 2015 Entry Draft, sixth round 157th overall by the New Jersey Devils. He played for the Merrimack College in 2015 and then was assigned to the Binghamton devils in 2018. By 20/21 he had signed a one year to a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and after his deal was done, he left the team as a free agent and signed a one year to a deal with the Blackhawks in 2022.

Seney had a productive year in 2023-2024 as he played 68 games for the IceHogs while scoring 23 goals and 40 assists for 63 points and had 60 penalty minutes. It's clear the ice hogs value his leadership and what he brings to the ice in terms of his skill set.

Over the past couple of years, the Blackhawks have been drafting steadily in the NHL Entry Draft collecting a large pool of prospects who many will be heading to Rockford. Will the Blackhawks continue to rebuild and find their game, the IceHogs will be filled with prospects and highly talented players who should give them a good chance of competing deeply into the season and into the playoffs this year.

Players like Frank Nazar, Ethan del Mastro and Nolan Allan along with Kevin Korchinski are some of the players who round out this roster and many hope including general manager Kyle Davidson of the Blackhawks that the IceHogs should have a good season this year.
