Former Blackhawks forward Alex Debrincat described in an interview on what it means for him that former Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane decided to remain with the Detroit Red Wings.

Both men were longtime linemates and friends during their time with the Chicago Blackhawks. After spending a short time with the Ottawa Senators, to bring cat told the team that he will not be signing long term, and he was then traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he locked himself into a new deal which holds a cap hit of 7.87 million over the next four years.

Debrincat was instrumental in pushing Kane to sign with the Red Wings after he had spent some time with the New York Rangers. Debrincat explained that he wasn't sure on whether his friend would return to the team or look elsewhere as his quest for another cup still burns.

"We were talking most of the summer, I think he didn't necessarily know what he was going to do," DeBrincat said Friday. "At the end of the day, I think he knew he liked playing here. He loved the fans and loved the team - just loved being a Red Wing. So, him coming back was huge for our team, and obviously it's great for me and him."

Debrincat explained how Kane is a mentor for him and what he has done to help elevate his game and make him a better player and how to treat his body for the rigors of the season.

He's taught me so much, on the ice and off the ice" DeBrincat said. "I think off the ice, he treats his body really well. And he eats the right stuff and he does whatever he can to get ready for the next game." DeBrincat also credited Jonathan Toews, Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith as key mentors in his career, too. "Those guys, really helped me throughout the early parts of my career. Just how to act like a pro, how to treat your body like a pro."

It remains to be seen on whether the Detroit Red Wings will make the playoffs this year as they came up short last year in game 82 but in the meantime hockey fans will get to see both players playing along the same line and see if they can recapture what they did in Chicago.
