A month before Kyle Davidson fired former Chicago Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson, Davidson said that it'd be ridiculous to fire Richardson. Then, on December 5th of last year, Richardson got the boot.

For his first head coaching job, Richardson was simply meant to be the tank commander and when he was hired, he knew what he was getting into and what the goals were. For his first job, Richardson took on most likely the most challenging project of taking over the worst team in the league, and Davidson appreciated that and called Luke and his wife the best team players you could ask for in the press conference after the firing was announced.
However, that doesn't mean the firing wasn't warranted, because it was.
The Blackhawks brought up Rockford Icehogs head coach Anders Sorensen to be the next coach in Chicago and he's done a decent job and a better job than Richardson.
Looking at it statistically wise, under Richardson in the 26 games he coached, he had a 8-16-2 with 18 points. So far, in the 29 games coached before the Four Nations Face-Off break, Sorensen has a 9-15-5 record with 23 points. Not great, but still better than Luke.
When it comes to the nitty-gritty stuff, it's all pretty much the same, but with the same struggling roster, not much can change that.
Under Luke, the Blackhawks played a very defensive heavy game of hockey. Now, under Anders, the defensemen don't drop back as fast and are more involved in the offensive play, and the fact there's always a forward ferociously forechecking, and the power play seems more efficient as well, which all leads to more goals going in (1.93 under Luke, 2.53 under Anders for Goals For/60).
Connor Bedard is someone benefiting greatly from this, and that's all you're really looking for. Under Richardson, Bedard had 16 points in 26 under Richardson, and under Sorensen, he has 30 points in 29 games and is looking more confident because of this slightly new system.
All the young talent on the roster is playing better, and the guys from Rockford coming up are having a more easier time adjusting because they already know Sorensen and their system.
At the end of the day, right now, it's all about the future, and if Sorensen has a system that can benefit them and moves in a better direction, until April, the goal should just be to stay in that lane.
