Marc-Andre Fleury voices frustration and speaks retirement in the NHL
Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury didn't hold back his feelings as the Minnesota Wild missed the playoffs, ending his impressive 17-year streak of postseason appearances.
Talking to The Athletic after practice on Thursday, Fleury expressed his disappointment, saying:
"It's frustrating. But I thought the guys here, we battled together trying to make a push."
Despite the Wild playing well since the All-Star break, the Nashville Predators' strong performance left no chance for them to climb the standings when it mattered most.
Fleury has no regrets about staying with the Wild after the trade deadline, wanting to continue his playoff journey with his Minnesota teammates. This season marks the first time since 2005-06 that he won't be playing in the playoffs.
In the past, Fleury had made it to the postseason for 17 consecutive seasons, spending 11 with the Penguins, four with the Golden Knights, and two with the Wild.
"I believed in our chance," he said. "I liked the way the guys were battling down the stretch here."
"It's weird. Surreal. Disappointing," Fleury added. He also mentioned his decision to uproot his family by moving again or retiring, highlighting and hinting retirement is incoming:
"I'm not moving the kids, playing in a new place, retiring and then moving the kids again," said Fleury (via The Athletic).
