Just hours after winning the gold medal as captain of the Canadian team, Shane Wright was sent down to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Kingston Frontenacs. At this year's World Junior Championship, Wright scored 7 points in 7 games, including a magnificent backhander to make it 2-0 last night against the Czech Republic.
Here is the Seattle Kraken's statement on Shane Wright:
Shane Wright started the year with the Kraken, but wasn't on the ice a lot. In his 8 games in the NHL, he scored only one goal and handed out one assist. He was sent down to the American Hockey League (AHL) to play for the Coachella Valley Firebirds. In his 5 games with the Firebirds, he showed progress and scored 4 goals. Since Wright only played 8 games in the NHL, his professional contract will not start this year.
The Kingston Frontenacs currently sit 11th overall in the OHL. They have won 17 of 34 games. Wright is expected to be traded to a competitive team in the coming days. The return for Kingston is expected to be huge.
Seattle seems to be going the developing route with their 4th overall pick in last year's draft. Obviously, they want him to gain more experience in juniors and be a key part of a team. Time will tell if this will be beneficial for Shane Wright. Do you think the Seattle Kraken should have kept him in the NHL?
