Alex Stalock exudes every one of those characteristics, and then some. The fact that he's had to make more than one comeback from serious medical crises showcases his extreme perseverance.
Back in 2011, while playing in the AHL, the then 23 year old severed his left peroneal nerve - meaning he was unable to control his lower leg or foot for months. This put the young goaltender's career on hiatus for almost a year.
Then, in 2020, after recovering from COVID-19, he developed a heart condition, myocarditis, which put him at incredible risk of cardiac arrest if he even attempted any physical activity. However, after receiving slightly differing diagnoses from 5 cardiologists, Stalock decided he needed to get back in the game.
Two years later, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that not only was he back, he would be here to stay. In his first start with the Chicago Blackhawks, Alex Stalock made 36 saves on 37 shots and immediately gave hope to the fanbase for the future.
Of course, his comeback season was no easy feat, as the 35 year old dealt with a concussion and eyesight issues that stemmed from it. Still, he came away with a 9-15-2 record and a .908 SV%.
Aside from his impressive achievements on the ice, Stalock is an all-around good guy, who brings constant positivity to everyone around him. He has shown himself to be a true leader on and off the ice.
In an interview with Ben Pope, Connor Murphy is quoted, saying, «It's been a frustrating, hard year - mentally and emotionally - and when you have a guy who can be really upbeat and positive and have the work ethic he brings, it's contagious to the team. It doesn't seem like anything will really keep him down.»
If all of that isn't the epitome of the Masterton Trophy, I don't know what is.
Best of luck, Alex! We're rooting for you!
