In an effort to boost their power play performance, the Chicago Blackhawks are making a notable adjustment, moving rookie defenseman Kevin Korchinski.
As they prepare to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, Korchinski will take over from experienced blueliner Seth Jones at the point in the first power play unit.
Head Coach Luke Richardson revealed this unexpected shift during Tuesday's practice. Currently sitting at 29th place in the NHL with an 11.3% power play conversion rate, the Blackhawks are facing a challenge, having scored only six goals on the man advantage, also ranking 29th.
Jones, a veteran player with 11 NHL seasons behind him, gracefully accepted the change, acknowledging the need for a different approach:
The decision to bring in Korchinski highlights his offensive skills from the blue line, a crucial factor in his selection as the No. 7 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. With one goal and four assists in 16 games, including two power-play assists, the 19-year-old has shown promise early in his professional career.
Korchinski understands the importance of the opportunity, stating:
Hockey fans can witness the debut of the Blackhawks' updated power play units in action during today's game against the Blue Jackets. The puck drops at 6 PM CT, 7 PM Eastern.
