The Edmonton Oilers ran into a tough situation and realized goaltender Stuart Skinner came down with an un-related COVID sickness before the game began, meaning they were left without a backup goaltender. The Oilers made a call to one of their ''EBUG's'' (Emergency backup goalie) and they found Matt Berlin, who was currently studying for his university midterm exams whenever he got the call from the Edmonton Oilers.
Berlin was born and raised in Edmonton, and it was truly a dream come true. With the Oilers up 7-3 over the Chicago Blackhawks with just a few minutes left in regulation, head coach Jay Woodcroft stated his players told him that they should give the goaltender a taste of the NHL and throw him in goal as the games almost over. Woodcroft listened, and he sure did!
Although it was an amazing moment for fans of the Oilers, some may have taken it differently, Blackhawks fans and player to be more specific. Imagine losing so much that an NHL team decides ''hey, why don't we throw this university student in goal for the heck of it?''. Connor McDavid realized how it may have been disrespectful towards the Blackhawks, and addressed it in the following interview shown below:
