This win brought the Red Wings within one point of the Maple Leafs in the NHL's Atlantic Division. However, the victory came at a cost.
Star player Patrick Kane took a hard hit from Maple Leafs player Pontus Holmberg during the game.
Kane, visibly in pain, crashed into the boards after a tangle with Holmberg near the Red Wings net.
After the incident, Kane left the ice, and the Red Wings later confirmed a lower-body injury, ruling him out for the rest of the game.
Coach Derek Lalonde, without giving a detailed update, did mention a key detail about Kane's condition. Lalonde confirmed that the injury was not related to Kane's hip, a significant relief given Kane's recent hip surgery in the offseason.
Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde had no update on Patrick Kane, who left the game with a lower-body injury tonight. "I don't think it's related to his hip, but again, I don't have all the information on it yet," he said.— Nick Cotsonika (@cotsonika) January 15, 2024
With the Red Wings' next game set for Wednesday, a more detailed update on Kane's status may come in the next few days, but fans can now hold their breath that it is not on the hip that he received surgery on this off-season.
