Konecny was tormented repeatedly by Matthews with hacks and whacks, but Matthews avoided physical conflict whenever Konecny thought it was appropriate to drop the gloves.
The 39-year-old Mark Giordano rushed to Matthews' aid after he sat back and grinned while waiting for help from his teammates. When Matthews refused to drop the gloves again but still traded slashes, Giordano grinned even more and waited for another player to help. Watch the video down below.
Don Cherry, a former Hockey Night in Canada host who has strong beliefs, of course had something to say about the Matthews/Konecny incident.

''I like Matthews, he's a good goal scorer and everything but you just can't do that when you're a goal scorer,'' said Cherry.
"He's gotta learn, just skate away," said Cherry regarding Matthews. "Don't stand there laughing while some other guy is fighting your battle for you."
''You have to take it like Lafleur," said Cherry. "The only time Lafleur ever got mad was when him and Mike Milbury used to go at it.''
''Don't start anything and just leave it alone and when the fight is going on don't stand there and laugh,'' said Cherry's last words.
Do you agree with Don Cherry, or is this just another one of his odd takes?
