Gary Bettman's Own Ruling on Pride Tape Is Going to Cause a Revolt In the League and backfire massively
The NHL and NHLPA may have to contend with a full-fledged revolt soon, after Travis Dermott flashed Pride Tape on his twig during Saturday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.
In defying the NHL's ruling, Dermott has taken the first step toward reversing the regressive policy.
I just noticed Travis Dermott is quietly using @PrideTape tonight! This is what allyship looks like folks! #Yotes #HockeyISforEveryone
In an attempt to make the NHL more inclusive, Dermott has flagrantly defied Bettman, Daly, and the NHL Board of Governors.
In light of his actions, it seems that he may be the first to face punishment or discipline.
It is possible, however, that there is a loophole that will spare Dermott from all of that, should the NHL/NHLPA decide to investigate the legal implications of the policy.
Dermott, by rule, is permitted to use whatever color tape he wants... and this wasn't part of any special night event.
Due to the fact that the night wasn't a promotional or specialty night, Dermott can use any tape he wants. According to rule 10.1 Dermott is safe.
Adhesive tape of any color may be wrapped around the stick at any place for the purpose of reinforcement or to improve control of the puck
Unless Bettman's hubris gets the better of him, Dermott should be safe from fines and suspensions.
At the moment, we are waiting for the NHL's decision on Dermott's decision to ignore its rules.
