Andrew Shaw may not have been the most skilled player and he definitely wasn't the tallest (5'11"), but he would outwork or outcompete anyone on the ice, or at least try to. The aptly nicknamed Mutt quickly adhered himself to Chicago Blackhawks fans, especially when the games counted most, the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 67 playoff games with Chicago, Shaw scored 35 points (16 goals), including five goals in each Stanley Cup title run in 2013 and 2015.
He played in 544 games in his 10 NHL seasons, 362 coming as a member of the Blackhawks, with 75 goals and 76 assists in the regular season.
Shaw, a Belleville, Ontario native, was passed over twice in the NHL Draft before the Blackhawks selected him in the fifth round in 2011 as a 19-year-old. His best season with Chicago was the 2013-14 campaign where he finished with 20 goals and 19 assists.
However, the winger -- known for his gritty, physical style -- was plagued by head injuries. A concussion Shaw sustained in November 2019 kept him off the ice for 14 months. Doctors told Shaw it was in his long-term best interest not to try another comeback. He officially retired from the game on April 26, 2021. Wishing fan-favorite Shawzie the best on his 31st birthday!!
