The NHL is one of the oldest sports organizations in the world, but has been struggling to grow the game recently. With all that, how much money does the league actually make?
Well, let's see the numbers:
2020/21: $2.90 billion
2019/20: $4.40 billion
2018/19: $5.09 billion
2017/18: $4.86 billion
2016/17: $4.43 billion
2015/16: $4.1 billion
2014/15: $3.98 billion
2013/14: $3.7 billion
2012/13: $2.63 billion
2011/12: $3.37 billion
2010/11: 3.09 billion
2009/10: $2.93 billion
There's only one reason to describe the drop in 2020/21: Covid.
So how does the NHL get their money? They get it from of course, jersey sales, really all merchandise (hats, shirts, pants, etc) and ticket sales. They also get it from TV deals. The NHL and ESPN agreed to a 7 year contract that will give them $400 million a year. The total deal adds up to almost $3 billion. Also, things the NHlL's name is on like the video game, air hockey, even toys.
It's unclear how much the teams make or lose each year, but the NHL makes a lot of cash. Now it'sjust up to them to grow the game, but it looks like they're not going to be able to figure that out any time soon.
