The morning of the 2022 NHL draft, the Blackhawks were sitting at 0 first round picks. By the end of the night, they had made 3 selections in the first round after a number of trades. Their final pick of the first round was 6 foot 4 defenseman Sam Rinzel. Here is what he had to say about being drafted by the Blackhawks.
Rinzel on how he felt hearing his name called
"I couldn't believe it. I had maybe a little bit of feeling that they were the team that had the most interest in me, but I just never knew. I had a feeling they were going to take a defenseman. I think for them to pull the trigger on me, I am very fortunate"
Rinzel on why he thought the Blackhawks were interested in him:
"Just kinda leading up to the draft, they were talking with me the most I feel. So you kind of have that little feeling with them, like a connection"
Rinzel on his mentality of first round vs second round:
"Just going in and hoping for the best. But at the end of the day, it's not where you were selected, it is what you do after. I still have a long road ahead for sure"
Rinzel on how he would describe his game:
"I think I'm a two way defenseman who can get up and down the ice. I'm tall and lanky but I feel like I'm a pretty good skater. I think I can provide some offense and kind of be an all around defenseman"
Rinzel on how he sees the Blackhawks rebuild from his perspective:
"I think it's gonna be a good opportunity for a lot of kids. And for a lot of guys to come in and have a chance to make an impact.
Rinzel on what he needs to work on moving forward to college hockey:
"I think just trying to work on my defensive game a little bit. And then kinda refining my game and being a little more mature, for sure"
