The 25-year-old Swede played in 14 games with Montreal this season, scoring three goals and four points while averaging around 15 minutes of ice time.
He's one of eight defenders on Montreal's roster, sharing the role of an extra defenseman with Johnathan Kovacevic.
Lindstrom, in his fifth NHL season, started with the Detroit Red Wings in 2019-20 after coming from Sweden's Frolunda HC.
He was Detroit's 38th pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Lindstrom joined the Canadiens in August as part of the deal that sent Jeff Petry to the Red Wings.
Despite not playing since December 9th, Lindstrom's move to waivers comes after a game against the Buffalo Sabres. He cleared waivers on October 8th, starting the season with the AHL's Laval Rocket before being called up in late October.
Lindstrom played four AHL games this season, with no points but one penalty and a -6 rating. What happens next will decide Lindstrom's path in the league.
