A week has passed since the launch of the NHL Free Agency. Hundreds of UFAs now have a new home for the upcoming season. Most notably, Johnny «Hockey» Gaudreau signed a seven-year contract ($9.75 million AAV) with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In addition, goaltender Darcy Kuemper signed a five-year, $5.25 million per season deal with the Washington Capitals. Although many players are no longer available, some good UFAs are still looking for a new team. Here are some interesting ones who are as free as air.
The Swedish defenceman is poised to sign a long-term, lucrative deal. According to David Pagnotta, he could also consider a one-year deal.
Since his NHL debut in 2014, he has only played for the Dallas Stars. Last season, he scored 6 goals and 41 assists. Klingberg is a good power play quarterback and moves the puck efficiently. He's a good puck carrier and does not hesitate to jump into the rush. Few teams have the cap space to acquire him. A return to Dallas seems possible. Recently, he has been linked to the Ottawa Senators.
The London native was an important piece of the Colorado Avalanche's recent Cup victory. He scored 15 points in 19 games during the last playoffs. Nazem Kadri is seeking a significant raise over his last contract, which had an AAV of $4.5 million AAV. He is an excellent offensive player and can be used as a shutdown player if needed. Players like Kadri are rare in the NHL. Based on his recent performances, he should receive a long-term contract of around $7 million and $8 million AAV. It is believed that Colorado is trying to free up cap space to be able to sign him. Kadri could wait to see if that works out, which would explain why he's still a free agent. With the loss of Gaudreau, Calgary could be interested in Kadri. But again, few teams can afford a player like him.
With 52 points last season, the right winger proved he is still an effective depth player despite his age. Coming off an $8 M AAV deal, Kessel will be looking at a contract between $3 million and $4 million. Phil "The Thrill" Kessel has a great shot and good offensive instincts. He used to be a consistent 30-goal scorer. He also brings experience to the table It will be interesting to see where he ends up and how many good hockey years he has left. Kessel will likely join a team that could not sign a top free agent in late summer.
