They made the trade with the Senators not to get Zaitsev, but to get a 2nd round pick for taking on his contract, which was absolutely a great move by Kyle Davidson.
Ben Pope, of the Chicago Sun-Times, has provided us with statistics of Zaitsev's first 3 games in Chicago. He states that it is stats from his first 6 games, but corrected himself in the comments and said that it was the first 3:
Zaitsev has clearly not been doing well, but that should be alright with fans, as it is tanking season in Chicago.
The Hawks are looking to get the #1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. They also have 15 picks in the first two rounds of the next three drafts, which is the most in the NHL.
Davidson gave us a heads up that a rebuild was in the works, so we can't be surprised.
Zaitsev's poor play is leading the Hawks closer to the #1 overall pick, so we shouldn't be mad because it gives us a better chance at landing Bedard.
The Hawks are currently 2nd to last in the league with just two more points than the last place Blue Jackets.
Zaitsev's poor play can hopefully lead the Hawks to the worst record in hockey.
