The NHL and NHLPA may create their own international tournament
In the absence of a recent World Cup of Hockey, it appears that the NHL and NHLPA are discussing a different path.
The NHL Players Union and the League are in the process of creating a new international tournament since NHL players are not permitted to participate in regular Olympic games.
The NHL and NHLPA are in discussions to create an international competition for 2025 that would start a rotation of events, including a return to the Olympics in 2026.
The first new international competition may take place in February of 2025, with the possibility of Olympic participation following after the 2025 games.
According to Bill Daly, there is no general concept of what the tournament itself will look like for now, but it could be very different from the World Cup of Hockey held previously. As a result of the suspension of the IIHF, it has proven difficult to get athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions.
Currently, there is no official word on how they will be able to get athletes from these two countries into the competition, but they are monitoring the situation in order to find a workaround with the IOC and the IIHF in order to get the competition going.
Although 2025 is the projected date, nothing is set in stone, and the NHL and NHLPA are still discussing how to proceed.
