This Referee Had to Barricade Himself and Call the Police
Youth Sports suffer across North America as they are having to use referees who are often underage to fill positions in leagues across Canada and the United States.
In order to distinguish between older and younger officials, minor officials will wear different color uniforms. Despite the fact that it sounds great in theory, there is an increasing amount of abuse directed towards older officials in
practice.
"We have people banging on the door, we called the police and have them coming."
Imagine Having To Call The Cops
On the Hockey Trend Instagram account, there was a video of a referee barricading himself in the locker room, while he called for help.
While speaking with the operator, you can hear the door banging.
A childish response to referees doing their jobs will only push them further away from the sport. Due to fans' and parents' behavior, leagues will continue to hire who they can, without providing the best training, resulting in poor officiating on ice.
If we want to fix this and prevent a video like this from happening again, the abuse of officials needs to stop.
