Back in the Blackhawks magical stretch of Stanley Cups and massive playoff success, Toews and Kane being put together signified the "nuclear option". Whenever the Hawks needed a big goal or were trailing in a series, Toews and Kane would play on the same line and would usually deliver in the clutch moments.
With the Hawks being on a terrible stretch as of late, Luke Richardson decided to give the Toews-Kane line a go, hoping that it would spark the offense and generate some much needed momentum for the team to build off of moving forward. However, that was not the outcome.
On Wednesday night against Edmonton, Toews and Kane were on the ice for 10:06 at 5-on-5, were outshot 11-7 (9-2 on goal), 7-2 on scoring chances, and 3-0 in goals. Instead of Toews and Kane creating magic like they used to, it was McDavid and Draisaitl making things happen.
It will be interesting to see if Richardson gives the Toews-Kane line another chance Saturday night against the Rangers. At this point in the season, in may be better to juggle the lines again to try to see if anyone can develop a chemistry with either player that can be successful moving forward.
