What is Jonathan Toews doing?
Jonathan Toews is entering his 15th season in the NHL. Toews will also be turning 35 years old in April of 2023. Toews also is an unrestricted free agent after this season. With all this being said, what is he doing?
Toews is putting up two goals in four games - that's what he's doing. Is that an impressive stat? Maybe not, but it is for a player who only put up 12 goals in 71 games last season. Blackhawks fans all around can get behind a Jonathan Toews that can put the puck in the net the way he did when he was younger. Toews has struggled since his absence from 2020-2021 season.
Blackhawks fans and teammates hope he can turn around what has been a «washed up» Toews. Players decline with age, but Toews dropped off fast. With this being said, maybe what Toews is doing is trying prove people wrong and that he's still Jonathan Toews. It could be a matter of Toews wanting to prove he's still got it, or could be a matter of Toews wanting other NHL teams to see he can still play and he'd be worth trading a lump some to add his name to their roster in a quest for the cup. There's also the chance that maybe Toews wants the Hawks to do well and he's going to give it his all. That's not a form of saying that Toews is purposely playing poor, but perhaps just found an extra hop in skate.
What should matter most to Blackhawks fans is that Toews is proving he can score and is increasing his trade value. Most Blackhawks fans are under the impression that he will be traded, so it's best to hope for a good return if that is the case. That doesn't mean people *want* to see Toews wearing a different uniform, but it's the idea that it's time for the Hawks to turn the page on the Kane and Toews era and progress through the slow, painful rebuild.
