Morgan Rielly is having an in-person hearing with NHL Player Safety after his actions late in Saturday's loss to the Ottawa Senators.
Rielly collided with Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig after Greig scored a slap shot into the Leafs' empty net.
Hockey icon and former CBC broadcaster Don Cherry expressed support for Rielly's response to Greig's goal. Cherry stated to Joe Warmington of The Toronto Sun:
«I am glad Rielly was on and I'm glad he did it,» said Cherry. «I know there is no rule in the book that says you don't do that but you just don't do that."
«I think the reason he (Greig) did is because the Leaf fans were going Go Leafs Go' (in Ottawa) and that's why he did it.»
«He laid there pretty good.".
Cherry also critiqued Greig's reaction, remarking, "He laid there pretty good," after what Cherry deemed a minor contact from Rielly.
