Former Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman linked to Stanley Cup Losers
The Edmonton Oilers front-office is currently in flux, as the team lost their General Manager Ken Holland had retired. It had happened soon after the Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Holland had been the GM for the past five years, after Steve Yzerman took over in Detroit in 2019. Despite holderin a higher office in the Red Wings organization, he wanted to continue to be a GM In the NHL.
But the team, now has a slew of candidates to chose from including Keith Gretzky and former Sabres GM Jason Botterill.
According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic, the team should look at hiring Stan Bowman, former GM for the Blackhawks. A controversial notion of course.
After resigning his position in 2021, after the Kyle Beach incident, he has been out of the league for some time, resolving to better himself. Bowman had recently been reinstated and is eligible for hire on July 10th, thanks to Gary Bettman.
Nugent-Bowman expands on the thought:
"There were whispers swirling around an Oilers-Bowman connection last month, something St. Louis Blues rinkside reporter Andy Strickland noted on Sunday. Those whispers grew louder after what happened the next day.
Bowman, coach Joel Quenneville and executive Al MacIsaac were reinstated by the NHL on Monday after a nearly three-year exile. They'd been banished for what the league deemed their «inadequate response» to Kyle Beach's allegations of sexual assault by video coach Brad Aldrich in Chicago in 2010.
The three men can start working for an NHL team as early as Wednesday. Jackson was asked Monday if Bowman would be considered for the vacant GM job. He could have shot down the possibility of the three-time Stanley Cup-winning manager working for the Oilers. Instead, Jackson said he hadn't thought about it because he'd been so busy dealing with free agency.
Until there's cold water poured on Bowman, 51, joining the Oilers or Jackson hires someone else, the smoke will continue to blow."
Should Oilers fans consider Bowman, despite all controversy as a serious candidate, or not?
