Manslaughter Investigation into Adam Johnson's death continues amidst a very serious update
There's been an update on the investigation of Adam Johnson's death. The former NHL forward was killed in an incident that saw Johnson pass away afterward.
The family of Johnson is still awaiting a judgment into the incident involving the suspect involved in the case.
Johnson, a Minnesota native who was 29, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The Panthers had described it as a " freak accident." On Nov. 14, South Yorkshire Police arrested a man but have not released his name or age. The man was released on bail the next day and has been " re-bailed " several times - a formality while the investigation continues. In the British system, an arrest signals the start of an investigation - a decision on charges would come afterward.
Due to the backlog of cases in Great Britain right now, the family will have to exercise patience beyond their capability.
It's been nearly a year since the incident, but the case isn't moving forward as a result.
Because of that, they will be extending Petgrave's bail until January, 25th, 2025.
The South Yorkshire Police released the following official statement via their website:
"We have been working meticulously to fully understand the unprecedented circumstances in which Adam sadly lost his life.
"This complex investigation into Adam's death remains ongoing and we are continuing to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service.
"Our thoughts remain wholeheartedly with Adam's family at this time."
Johnson lost his life tragically on October 28th, 2023 when his neck was lacerated by the skate of fellow competitor Matt Petgrave, during the game between the Nottingham Panthers, and Sheffield Steelers.
According to sources such as HockeyFeed, only a magistrate can extend bail beyond 12 months. This means this could be a complex case for the police to solve, regarding all the variables involved.
It is unfortunate that the Johnson family has to endure the pain of his loss, while the case continues to get drawn out in the meantime.
May they get a resolution to the pain soon, and receive justice soon.
The horrifying incident saw major leagues across the world adopt a stance on neck protection.
