The 33-year-old center/winger is on an expiring contract with the Dallas Stars and already has suitors calling.
With Duchene finding his game again in Dallas, his offensive output has been one key to the Stars' success lately. But with a tight salary cap, the Stars may have to consider Duchene a cap casualty.
This could be a boon for the Chicago Blackhawks who have plenty of cap space to play with and add Matt Duchene.
According to Rob Couch of The Hockey News, the Hawks could offer him a multi-year deal, which the Stars couldn't match up with.
With Connor Bedard's maturation to continue, Duchene would be an invaluable leader to add to the offensive core of the Blackhawks. He could be the next mentor in the line of veterans already on the roster.
The Blackhawks are looking to improve their lineup and take some of the burden off of Bedard's shoulders. Duchene's flexibility to play center or winger, along with his offensive capabilities means a significant boost for the Blackhawks.
The only question left is, would Duchene prefer a contending or rebuilding team for his next year in the league?
