Red Wings player injured at Olympics and forced to fly back to the US
Alex Lyon was brought to Detroit from Florida during free agency, after a strong showing in the post-season, backing up Sergei Bobrovsky. This season he had 44 career starts during 2023-2024.
He was also a foundation for the team while starting goalie Ville Husso was out long-term during the season.
Lyon would elect to play for his country on the world stage at the IIHF 2024 World Hockey Championships, concluding the 2023-2024 season.
However, while battling it out in Czechia, he would be injured during a match and forced to return home.
The most unfortunate part of the injury was after making 14 saves against Team Germany, he was stepped on by an on-ice official. The incident occurred during the 2nd period of the game.
It would be another Red Wing, in Trey Augustine who would set into the net for Team USA.
Augustine would stop 11 of 12 against and secure the victory against Team Germany in relief of Lyon.
Husso and Lyon, are both entering the final year of their contract with the Detroit Red Wings and are likely to be in competition for the starting role during the 2024-2025 NHL season.
