The Boston Bruins have had to make a difficult decision today, as they have waived a defenseman who is likely on his way to the AHL, in Providence should he go unclaimed.

That defenseman is former Chicago Blackhawk, Ian MIichell who was sent to the Bruins as part of the Nick Foligno, and Taylor Hall trade.

Mitchell was sent to Boston with another former Blackhawk Alec Regula.

Well, today presents a unique opportunity for the Blackhawks to reclaim Mitchell, for free.

The Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Ian Mitchell on waivers for the purposes of being assigned to the AHL, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Mitchell began the year on Boston's injured non-roster list, and will now head to the minors after returning to full health.

During his short NHL career, Mitchell has only seen 95 games of action, scoring 18 points( 4 G, 14 A) and 32 PIMs in the league.

He has always been a fringe NHLer but at 25 could fit into the Blackhawks' rebuild, play some more games in Rockford, and serve as a call-up.

Owns excellent wheels and plenty of all-around mobility from the back end. Moves the puck well and is a very good passer. Is also a smooth defender who keeps things simple. Has some leadership qualities, too. Does not have ideal size (5-11, 173 pounds) for the blueline position at the National Hockey League level, so he must add bulk and get physically stronger. Also needs to work on his lack of power with his point shot.

Mitchell's current cap hit is easily affordable and will fit under the Blackhawks salary cap, especially if he's buried in the AHL.

He signed a one-year, two-way contract in Boston, for $775K and could be a nice complimentary piece for the team.
