Jarry, the once-thought prominent face of the franchise for the Pittsburgh Penguins, has cleared waivers and is now eligible to join the AHL, also known as the American Hockey League.
He is retainable to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Pittsburgh's affiliate, according to reporters.
Although Jarry's time in Pittsburgh isn't over yet, the veteran goaltender can't be pleased by this news.
He will be replaced with rookie, Joel Blomqvist, who has been called up to back up goaltender, Alex Nedeljkovic, who will be taking over as the Penguins' starting goalie.
Jarry signed for a five-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins dating back to July 2023 for $26.8-million. This leaves three years remaining on the veterans deal which is at a $5.38-million cap hit.
Despite this investment, the Penguins general manager, Kyle Dubas, has explained that this move is in the best interest for both Jarry and the team.
Dubas explained this morning:
Unfortunately Jarry lost his starting role back last spring to Nedeljkovic, but regained it to start off this years season.
Despite this goaltender recovering his starting position, his struggles have been noticed.
He has allowed a goal on the first shot, not once, but six times this year.
The Blackhawks may be the ideal location, a no pressure organization for Jarry to build his confidence back up as Petr Mrazek has not been shining bright in Da Windy City.
Sitting at a .926 save percentage and a 2.12 goals-against average over the past five games, it is evident Jarry is struggling.
Despite his struggles on the ice, Dubas has praised his efforts.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently sitting in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division. They're standing at a record of 18-20-8, with a three-game losing streak.
While Jarry's NHL future is unknown, the Penguins will do everything in their power to become bigger competition within the next few months.
