The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Taylor Hall to the Carolina Hurricanes tonight, in a complex three-team deal involving Mikko Rantanen.

Chicago Blackhawks fans were surprised tonight, as the team scratched Hall from the lineup ahead of the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The deal saw the Carolina Hurricanes acquire both Taylor Hall and Mikko Rantanen from the Avalanche, while the Blackhawks weaponized their cap space as the third team involved.

According to NHL Insiders Frank Seravalli, the Carolina Hurricanes sent Martin Necas and Jack Drury, 2025 2nd-round pick and 2026 4th-round pick to the Avalanche.

While the Blackhawks will retain half of Rantanen's salary.

News of Taylor Hall being a healthy scratch for the Hawks wasn't a surprise as he was named one of the league's top trade candidates this season.

NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun was one of the first pundits to break the news of Taylor Hall's trade to the Hurricanes tonight.

It appeared that Hall didn't want to be traded but he had accepted the reality it could happen, per this quote below

"I came into this year wanting to continue being a Blackhawk for years to come," Hall said Wednesday. "I don't know if that's going to be the case anymore, but I'll leave that door open, for sure and understand it's a business and that the team's going to do what's best for them. We'll see what happens."

The return for Hall wasn't much, but it was the same 2025 third-round pick they traded to the Hurricanes for a 2024 3rd-round pick which was used to select forward Jack Pridham.

CHGO Sports:

In exchange for Hall, the Blackhawks will acquire a 2025 third-round pick, the same pick they traded to the Hurricanes for a 2024 third-round pick, which they used to select Jack Pridham.

Hall was a part of a package deal from the Boston Bruins which sent Nick Foligno, and himself to the Blackhawks for defenseman Ian Mitchell, and Alec Regula.

In 46 games played for the Hawks, Hall has scored 24 points (9 G, 15 A) and could find himself on a contending team before the trade deadline.

This chapter for Hall's career has ended, as he now gets to play on a Hurricanes team that could compete in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

A situation he's been no stranger to, as he was a member of the Bruins team that won a President's Trophy in 2022-2023.

Best of luck, Taylor.
