Krebs has been with the Sabres for the past three years as he was part of the trade that sent Jack Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights Where he has not seen the opportunity that as expected even though he has played 210 games with the Sabres.
Head coach Lindy Ruff has only been awarding him roughly 13 1/2 minutes of ice time which is certainly not what he was expecting. Many feel that he is underutilized with the Sabres as the team continues to struggle for consistency including in their win column.
Adding a player like Krebs will certainly help the Blackhawks as the 23-year-old who stands at six foot and 186 lbs has played seventeen games this season, scoring two goals with four assists for six points and is a - 3. His best goal total with the Sabres was in 2022 dash 23 when he scored nine goals out of 74 games.
If general manager Kyle Davidson were to take an interest in this player, it would certainly reshuffle the lines and help strengthen the team down the middle which is one of the sore areas that needs to be shored up. The Sabres on the other hand have 3 centres already that are producing which include Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens and newly acquired Ryan McLeod from the Edmonton Oilers. This puts Krebs well down the depth chart and likely on the trading block.
Krebs holds a cap hit of $1.45 million and still has one year remaining on his contract. Trading for him would certainly be a bargain when it comes to his cap hit and what he could bring to the team if given the ice time and the room to grow and develop. Time will tell if Davidson would be willing to make a deal for him an it would likely come at the 2025 NHL trade deadline in March.
