The Blackhawks and Canadiens Blockbuster Trade That Was Almost at the NHL Draft
During the 2024 NHL Entry Draft GM Kent Hughes of the Montreal Canadiens and GM Kyle Davidson, almost made a huge trade.
The Canadiens released a documentary that was filmed during the draft, detailing the Canadiens' draft experience in Las Vegas.
Kyle Davidson and the Chicago Blackhawks tried their best to trade up during the NHL draft, which included a 1st overall pick.
We see Kent Hughes turn to Martin Lapointe and discuss the offer:
"If the draft doesn't go our way, would you trade the No. 5 overall pick for their unprotected 2025 1st round pick + a 2nd round pick?"
- Kent Hughes
Hughes was ready to make the trade with Davidson, should Ivan Demidov not have been available at 5th overall. Of course, we know how that went down, as the Blackhawks missed out on Demidov and Cayden Lindstrom.
The Canadiens don't mention directly who the offer is from, but Pierre LeBrun is dropping truth nuggets out here.
«It could have been a fireworks show at the start of the 2024 draft. I'm told the Blackhawks offered their first pick next year, unprotected, plus another pick, in exchange for the fourth overall pick.
I think it was pretty close, but the Blue Jackets turned it down. They really like Cayden Lindstrom .»
- Pierre LeBrun
The Blackhawks made the same offer to the Canadiens and Blue Jackets and weren't able to secure either spot in the draft, unfortunately.
Due to the fact that the Blackhawks are likely to be a lottery team again, the pick for 2025 could be a top 1st or 2nd overall pick, the offer was tempting.
The Habs would refuse the offer and draft Ivan Demidov, leaving Kyle Davidson hanging, like the Blue Jackets.
No Demidov for us!
