It's been viewed as one of the worst trades in Blackhawks history after the organization traded Artemi Panarin to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Brandon Saad on June 23rd 2017.

This deal was an attempt by then general manager Stan Bowman to bring back his band who were so successful in winning 3 Stanley cups throughout that decade. The trade appeared lopsided in favor of the Blue Jackets as Panarin along with Tyler Motte and a sixth-round pick in 2017 was sent two the Blue Jackets in exchange for Saad, Anton Forsberg and a fifth-round pick in 2018.

Prior to this trade, Panarin signed a 2-year deal worth $12 million with the Blackhawks which gave the Blue Jackets cost certainty. His career continued to climb even though he was on the Blue Jackets and then he signed a contract with the New York Rangers which saw his career go to the next level.

Since that move, the Blackhawks have gutted their roster and have begun to rebuild from the ground up. With players like Connor Bedard, Kevin Korchinski and Lukas Reichel to name a few, the Blackhawks will continue to draft players and prepare to take the team to the next level which means an aggressive in unrestricted free agency.

Unrestricted free agency will begin on July 1st at 12:00 PM eastern.
