Tom Craig, a 2024 Olympian in Field Hockey for his country Australia, has issued an apology to the media following a release from a jail in Paris.
Craig allegedly fled on foot after being caught by police, while in possession of an illegal substance. He fled police on foot, which resulted in an arrest and his spot in the Olympics being pulled.
"Australian hockey player Tom Craig attempted to run away from police trying to arrest him [...] on the streets of Paris before realising he could not escape pursuing officers.
The Kookaburras veteran has had his Olympic rights stripped from him, been banned from the athletes village and told he does not have the right to march in the closing ceremony."
After spending 18 hours in jail, it's made clear that he will not be facing any fines or criminal charges.
"I'd firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the past 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions. My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport, and the Australian Olympic team. I've embarrassed you all. I'm truly sorry."
Dodging a bullet not receiving criminal charges, he still faced a life-changing event in not being able to participate in Paris, 2024 Olympics.
