Former NHL goaltender officially announces retirement at the age of 27

A former Montreal Canadiens goaltender, Michael McNiven, has announced his retirement from pro hockey as a whole, at the age of 27.

McNiven spent his career in North America as well as in France where he tested the waters.

McNiven joined the Montreal Canadiens in the summer of 2015 as an undrafted free agent, spending five years with the organization before heading to the Flames in 2022, where he was traded just 19 days after being in the city of Calgary.

He is now taken on a new role, being the assistant coach of the Powell River Kings in the BCHL.

"My goal is to create a place where our players can do their best, both mentally and physically," McNiven said. "I've played at all three professional levels in North America, so I understand what it takes. I'm here to give everything I've got to help us win a Fred Page Cup."

Following a wealth of experience combined with his retirement, he is expected to make a big impact on the River Kings in the BCHL moving forward.
