Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin won't be at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto. He told the team he'd rather rest and prepare for the second half of the season.
Ovechkin went to the 2023 NHL All-Star Game with his son Sergei but has skipped it a few times before to get some rest. He leads the Capitals in scoring this season with 24 points in 36 games but has only scored eight goals. He needs 65 more to break Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.
With Washington fighting for a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference, taking time to prepare for the second half makes sense. Ovechkin turned 38 a few days before training camp.
Tom Wilson got his second NHL All-Star nomination in three seasons. Fans are also encouraged to vote for Dylan Strome, Anthony Mantha, and John Carlson for the remaining spots.
The 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend is at Scotiabank Arena from Feb. 1-3. Wilson's family will be there as it's in his hometown of Toronto.
