The team's general manager, Bill Armstrong announced that they have added former NHL player John Madden, who won a Cup while with New Jersey in 2000 and 2003 and with Chicago in 2010.
The 49-year-old Madden spent three seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Monsters (AHL) from 2016-19. He led Cleveland to a 101-99-19-9 record in his three seasons, including an appearance in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2018-19.
Madden had previously performed assistant coaching duties with the San Jose Sharks from 2020-2022.
"We are very pleased to add John to André Tourigny's coaching staff," said Armstrong. "John is an experienced coach and a three-time Stanley Cup champion. He's a proven winner who had a very good NHL career as a defensive specialist. I'm confident that he will be able to help our penalty-killing unit and he will be a great addition to our staff."
The Coyotes can certainly use Madden's defensive skills as they finished 28th in penalty kill with a 75.0 rate. Their 3.77 goals allowed per game put them in 30th place. They are a rebuilding team, but improving those numbers has to be on Madden's to-do list.
The Sharks were second in the NHL last season in penalty-killing, coming in with an impressive 85.2 percent.
Head coach André Tourigny had this say about Madden's abilities.
"It's exciting to have the privilege to work alongside a proven winner like John," said Coyotes Head Coach André Tourigny. "His resume as a coach and as a player is extensive. Our staff, our players and I will take full advantage of his knowledge and experience."
Madden comes with a good work ethic, and will be excellent working with the young prospects the Coyotes will have.
"I'm very excited to join André's coaching staff," said Madden. "The Coyotes have a lot of young talent and are building something special in Arizona. I'm really looking forward to being a part of it and can't wait to get started."
