The Achilles injury trend among players continues this offseason. Joining the unfortunate list is Luke Philp, as announced by Chicago's AHL team, Rockford. The forward underwent Achilles surgery recently, sidelining him for approximately six months.

Philp, 27, showcased his potential with a debut in the NHL last season, contributing an assist in three games with the Blackhawks. Predominantly playing for the IceHogs in the minors, he boasted impressive numbersnetting 29 goals and 24 assists in 60 games, ranking fourth in team scoring.

A one-year extension with a $775K cap hit at the NHL level was Philp's reward in March, along with a $375K salary in the minors. Regrettably, his injury will limit his playing time until around February.

Starting the season on injured reserve, Philp's six-day stint with Chicago in 2022-23 results in a minor cap charge until his return. The calculation: NHL days divided by upcoming season days (192) multiplied by NHL cap hit ($775K), leading to a prorated cap charge of slightly over $24K.
