The emergence of 18-year-old superstar Connor Bedard has been a highlight for the Blackhawks. However, Head Coach Luke Richardson is adopting a cautious strategy to ensure Bedard's growth, and his ice time will be cut down.

In a recent press conference, Richardson revealed the team's decision to restrict Bedard's ice time moving forward, especially when protecting a lead. The rationale behind this move is to rely on seasoned players with a knack for handling crucial moments. Richardson also took the moment to call out Bedard, for taking too long of shifts that costed the team two goals:

Luke Richardson mentioned Connor Bedard's shift length on the Capitals' first goal and maybe not having the energy to hold off Mantha at the end of it. Bedard was on the ice for 1:33 that shift.

Richardson than revealed Bedard is not ready to play on a 5-on-6 situation 'at this level' yet:

"When they're close and we have the lead, I think we've been using guys like Dickinson's line and Tyler Johnson's and Kershev's, guys like that, that have a little more experience to play in a five-on-six situation at this level. So he's not going to be probably a part of that equation yet.

But, you know, he's a great player and he's got a good eye-hand coordination with stick abilities that at some point we'd like him to be involved in that, but right now, that probably plays into ice time as well at the end of the game."

Richardson's intentional move to limit Bedard's exposure in critical moments reflects a broader strategy to ensure proper development for the 18-year old.

As Bedard matures and accumulates more experience, the Blackhawks anticipate expanding his role in the team. Richardson's decision to restrict his ice time in specific situations underscores a deliberate effort to protect Bedard's development and readiness.

While fans might crave to see Bedard in pivotal moments, Richardson's careful approach signifies a commitment to his overall progress.
