This news comes on the heels of last year's emotional rollercoaster when Patrick Kane was traded and Jonathan Toews was not re-signed by the Blackhawks.
The current state of the Chicago Blackhawks aligns with preseason expectations, residing in the bottom tier of the league in their first season with Connor Bedard, the highly touted first overall pick. Revamping a team entirely with one star player is a tall order, even if that player is seen as the next big thing.
Following their fortunate draft lottery win, the Blackhawks complemented their emerging talent with seasoned leadership and experienced players who could aid in the rebuilding process. This led to the acquisition of Nick Foligno and Corey Perry, both signed to generous contracts.
Realistically, no team would take on the full $4 million for either player, and the Blackhawks are open to retaining half of that if there's interest, much like Max Domi at least years deadline who was traded by the Chicago Blackhawks to the Dallas Stars.
Considering the team's current focus is not on immediate success, both Foligno and Perry are rentals given their one-year deals and will be moved at the deadline.
Both veterans are key contributors on the top power-play unit, this role is expected to further bolster their production. Corey Perry, who leads the team in points with six, has been particularly impressive. He ranks sixth among forwards in ice time per game and is set to continue his presence in front of the net on the power play throughout the season, should he remain with Chicago. Meanwhile, Nick Foligno, filling in on the top line, has notched four points in eight games, even at 36 years old, he continues to showcase the confidence he gained from the previous season with the Boston Bruins.
As Foligno is still in search for his first Stanley Cup, he and Corey Perry will be valuable assets that'll be on the trade block come the NHL's trade deadline.
