OFFICIAL: #NYR have acquired a third-round and fifth-round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft, as well as a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, from Colorado in exchange for goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. New York Rangers (@NYRangers) July 7, 2022
This likely means pending UFA goalie Darcy Kuemper is on his way out of Colorado, following his Stanley Cup win and stretch of good hockey over the last few seasons. Kuemper is likely due for a large payday on the open market.
Georgiev is coming of a bit of a shaky season for the Rangers, but now gets to play behind the powerhouse Avs roster. This could end up looking like a steal for the Avs as Georgiev was one of the higher ranked trade targets this summer and has only had one season below a .900 save percentage.
The Avalanche won't be the first team to lose their starting net minder following a Stanley Cup run as the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks lost their goalie to free agency in Antti Niemi to the San Jose Sharks.
