Just as the case is with any EBUG, there you are, just casually enjoying your hockey game, when the opposing team's first goalie goes down with an upper-body injury. That's what back-up goalies are for, though, right? Anthony Stolarz took the place between the pipes for Gibson, and shortly thereafter, suffered his own injury (lower-body), preventing him from returning to the game for the final period.
Enter the EBUG. Tom Hodges, wearing a Ducks jersey with his green, home team colored pads and mask, joined Anaheim for their third period with a tie game.
The last time the Texas native appeared in a professional hockey game was in the 2016-17 season with the Allen Americans of the ECHL. He made one appearance.
Unfortunately, at 9:22,
Trevor Zegras took an interference penalty, and Dallas scored about 40 seconds into the Power Play.
Five minutes after that, 28 year old Hodges was pulled to give the Ducks an extra attacker for the final 5 of the game. But the Stars cashed in on the open net, and won the game 4-2.
Gibson was perfect for the first period, stopping 5 of 5. Stolarz replaced him for the second, stopping 8 of 10. Hodges faced 3 shots, and only the PPG got by him.
At the end of the game, he was shown love and appreciation from both sides, and got the third star of the game.
Tom Hodges stated that he was «probably the most nervous I've ever been in my life», and praised the Anaheim Ducks for their kindness and appreciation.
The 28 year shared some info on what he does as a career & more during his after game interview.
EBUGs are incredible people, and even though we hope we don't have to see them, we love when we do.
